finger food ideas?

There are so many things I could blog about because we have had several fun adventures lately and just been really busy with life in general. Natalie's arrival is right around the corner. I can tell the reality of it hasn't set in yet for me because I haven't felt that urgency to get everything wrapped up as quickly as possible (much to my (always organized and completing things early) mother's unspoken dismay). But she will be here in a month or less, so time is slipping away. She is doing great and growing fast. We love her so much right now, and I know that love will only increase ten-fold when they place her in my arms.

So instead of blogging about Natalie projects or the fun stuff we've been up to lately, I wanted to post about one of my favorite topics -- FOOD! I know this is everyone else's favorite subject too, so hopefully I will get some helpful feedback from you all.

Friday night, we are going to a Halloween party that a married couple Matt works with is having at their home. We are supposed to bring finger foods, and I am dying to make something (even if it is something I can't eat!) and have been running through various ideas in my mind.

I have searched online for ideas, but I just can't really decide on anything, so I need your help. Here is what I am looking for:

it needs to be...
1) a finger food (obviously)
2) rather inexpensive to make (hey, we are cheapos!)
3) not too much preparation time involved (bonus points if it is something that can be made the night before!)
4) tastetastic!!!

So far, here are some ideas:

Cream cheese wontons
Wonton wrappers stuffed with cream cheese and then fried.

Pigs in a blanket
Cocktail sausages in crescent rolls.

Tortilla rolls
Tortilla strips rolled up with a layer of cream cheese, green onions, pimentos, black olives, and maybe a couple of other things that I can't recall. -- not cheap and time consuming but sooo good!

Sausage balls
Sausage and cheese formed into balls.

Vegetable tray
Assorted veggies and dip -- this something I could actually eat there.

Sandwich tray
Assorted sandwiches, including ham/cheese, turkey/cheese, peanut butter/jelly, egg salad (eggs are really cheap!), and pimento cheese.

Deviled eggs
Again, eggs are cheap.

So as you can see, my ideas are mostly uncreative. Any suggestions? Anyone already know what they are taking to an upcoming Halloween party?

I have tried all of these except for the cream cheese wontons, but I have had something similar to them on a Chinese buffet before and loved them.

Help me out!

  2. Sounds like you really like the tortilla rolls... I would TOTALLY eat the heck out of those if you brought them to MY party =)

  3. I'm a huge fan of sausage balls myself, but the one time that Dave and I tried to make them it was a disaster! It was just a greasy gloopy mess.

Of the ones you listed, I'd cast my vote for the Tortilla rolls because they look sooo delicious!!

    Other possibilities:

Cocktail weenies (the grape jelly recipe) in a crock pot.

    Little pimento cheese sandwiches.

Several containers of store bought hummus (different flavors) and a variety of pita chips.

Chicken salad and a cracker tray.

Fresh fruit salad (seasonal fruit chopped up and mixed together). This is my go-to contribution at potluck dinners.

    Have fun!!!
